Restoule to Kenora

We’ve been making our way west along the Trans Canada Highway at a moderate pace enjoying the most gorgeous views - particularly the north shore of Lake Superior. Today we’re in Kenora taking advantage of good cell service so we can do an update and John can take care of some tasks related to the closing of his house sale. We’ve been having pretty good luck finding nice free camping spots and the weather and bugs have been better than expected (except for one major tick infestation). Christy had her first driving lesson with the trailer. It was brief but thankfully accident free! We were sad to miss tasting the famous apple fritters at the Voyageur Lodge in Batchawana Bay…John had been hearing about them for the whole drive up to that point. Unfortunately the Lodge was out of power and hadn’t made any fritters that day. We had the best camp spot so far right on the river in Nipigon…it felt like we were living in a houseboat on the water when we sat at the table! It’s been nice to sit still for a couple of days in Kenora and enjoy some fishing, swimming, hiking, and the company of John’s brother, Paddy, while he’s temporarily posted in Kenora. We’ll have a nice dinner out tonight before we leave Kenora with our next destination being the Winnipeg area.

First week on the road!

The Surveyor Legend officially hit the road on June 16th! The first week of our journey was mostly spent driveway surfing as we visited family and friends along our route that we hadn't yet had the chance to say goodbye to. We headed north from Bancroft amidst a blistering heat wave which stress tested our solar setup, but we prevailed! As we drove through Algonquin Park, we were treated to a moose sighting and we ended our day at Restoule Provincial Park after a long day of driving. The park was lovely and quiet with surprisingly few bugs. Dakota enjoyed running around in the offleash beach area and we even saw some deer last night during our evening walk. As I write, we are passing through Sudbury heading Northwest in the hopes of securing a sweet free campsite on crown land. Our new home on wheels has everything we need and really suits us well. We're getting more efficient at setting up and breaking camp and we seem to be slipping nicely into more established roles. We're noticing Dakota seems to be having more anxious behaviours as she adjusts, but it stands to reason as we are all learning how to live differently on the road.

The Shakedown

It’s been a non-stop flurry of activity for us as we’ve sold both our homes and downsized our belongings to fit inside our new home on wheels. We’ve been preparing, cleaning, fixing, organizing, selling, learning, and tweaking over the past few weeks. Last week, we did a short trial run or “shakedown” trip where we put everything to the test. So far we’ve only found a few minor things that need attention, so we’re calling that a success! John has put together a very impressive solar setup which seems to fulfill all of our power needs and more. He’s truly a genius. We’re learning how to use our water most efficiently, as we can already tell that water will be the real challenge when we’re off grid. It really makes you realize how much water we consume on a daily basis taking for granted that it just flows freely in our homes. We’re focusing on cleaning up John’s house for its new owners, putting the finishing touches on the trailer, and saying our farewells before we shove off during the week of June 16th.
